Rohit Sharma thrashes Afghan bowlers, India conceives second World Cup victory

New Delhi: India defeated Afghanistan by eight wickets in the 9th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 played at Arun Jetley Stadium, on Wednesday, thanks to captain Rohit Sharma's brilliant 131 run innings.

India achieved Afghanistan's target of 273 runs in 35 overs at the loss of two wickets, captain Rohit Sharma scored 131 runs off 84 balls, his innings included 5 sixes and 16 fours.

Apart from this, Ishan Kun scored 47, Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 55 runs while Shreyas Iyer scored 25 runs.

Rashid Khan took two wickets for Afghanistan; Rohit was awarded the Player of the Match award for his brilliant batting.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma became the batter with the most sixes in international cricket and the most centuries in the World Cup.

Chasing the target, Indian captain Rohit Sharma surpassed former West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle by hitting the 554th six of his international career in the innings against Afghanistan.

Chris Gayle hit 553 sixes in his international career, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi 476, New Zealand's Brendon McCullum 398 sixes.

Rohit surpasses Tendulkar to score most centuries in World Cup

In pursuit of the target, Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant century against Afghanistan, after which he became the batter to score the most seven centuries in the World Cup, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar.

Rohit scored the seventh century in 19 innings of the World Cup, before this, the record for scoring the most centuries in the ODI World Cup was held by India's Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 6 centuries in 44 innings.

This was the 31st century of Indian captain Rohit Sharma's ODI career.

India's fastest World Cup century

Rohit's century against Afghanistan is also the fastest century by India in the World Cup. He scored a century in 63 balls with the help of 4 sixes and 12 fours.

Earlier, former Indian captain Kapil Dev scored a century off 72 balls in the 1983 World Cup.

On Wednesday, Afghanistan and India played a match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, where Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat first.

Afghanistan scored 272 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs, Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 80 runs.

Afghanistan's first wicket against India fell on a total of 32, when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed opener Ibrahim Zadran for 22 runs.

After this, Rahmatullah Gurbaz was sent to the pavilion by Hardik Pandya on 21 and Rahmat Shah was sent to the pavilion by Shardul Thakur for 16 runs.

Azmatullah Umarzai and Hashmatullah Shahidi batted responsibly and took over the team after being dismissed for 63 runs, a 121-run partnership was formed between the two.

But then Azmatullah Umarzai scored 62 and Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 80 runs.

Apart from this, Mohammad Nabi scored 19, Rashid Khan 16, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 10 and Naveen-ul-Haq scored 9 runs, thus Afghanistan scored 272 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs.

For India, Bumrah took 4 wickets, Hardik Pandya took 2 and Kuldeep Yadav and Thakur took one wicket each.
